What the Elo calculator estimates
The calculator handles one result from one player's perspective. A win has an actual score of 1, a draw has 0.5, and a loss has 0. It compares that score with the result predicted from the rating difference. Performing better than expected gains points; performing worse loses points.
The result is not a claim about playing strength after one game. Ratings become informative across many games against players in the same pool.
How expected score is calculated
The classic expected-score formula is:
expected = 1 / (1 + 10 ^ ((opponent rating - your rating) / 400))
Equal ratings produce an expected score of 50%. Against a player rated 200 points higher, the lower-rated player has a smaller expected score, so a win gains more and a loss usually costs less.
How rating change is calculated
The update formula is:
change = K × (actual score - expected score)
Your estimated new rating is the current rating plus that change. The calculator keeps a decimal result so the arithmetic remains visible. A provider may round only after applying additional rules.
Choosing the correct K-factor
The K-factor determines how quickly a rating moves. Higher values create larger changes; lower values make ratings more stable. Do not choose the value that gives the result you prefer. Use the factor defined for your age, rating, experience, competition, or provisional status by the relevant provider.
FIDE rules and online platforms can use different factors and update procedures. Check the current regulations instead of assuming that 20, 32, or 40 applies everywhere.
Reading the calculator result
Expected score is a long-run prediction, not the probability that a single game must follow a particular outcome. A displayed change of +7.4 means the classic formula estimates a gain of 7.4 points before provider-specific rounding or restrictions.
Time controls also have separate player pools. Review chess time controls before comparing rapid, blitz, and classical ratings.
Limits of an Elo estimate
Official calculations may include rating floors, capped rating differences, provisional procedures, event batching, special rounding, inactivity rules, or corrections. Some platforms use Glicko or another system rather than classic Elo. The opponent's change may also differ when the players use different K-factors.

Does a draw always leave the rating unchanged?
